Speech

Last week I said my speech to the class. I felt very nervous. This week on Thursday I will be going in the final with five other year 6's. My speech is about Orca's in Seaworld and how poorly they get treated.

Here Is My Speech....

How would you like to be stuck in a tank for your whole life. I doubt you would like it, especially if the tank was too small, had nowhere to move, and had children putting their fingers all over the glass, giving you a headache.

In Marine Parks the Orcas and other marine animals live in tanks that to us might seem huge, but Orcas can grow to be almost the size of a school bus so the tanks could be seen as bathtubs in comparison.

Careless, cruel and conniving are just three words I word use to describe seaworld. It is great that people want to see these beautiful animals, but wouldn’t you rather see a happy animal in the wild then seeing a depressed animal in captivity being forced to do tricks.

In 1970 seaworld captured their first herd of baby Orcas, taking them away from their mothers. In the process of capturing them, putting them on the boat, and taking them to land 3 baby orcas died that day.

When Seaworld got banned from capturing orcas in Washington bay they went to Iceland where they could still do this terrible thing to animals.

Tilikum was one of the most famous orcas at SeaWorld; he was the largest orca in captivity. But before he was in seaworld he was in sealand. Sealand captured Tilikum when he was just 2 years old and had a horrendous ways of teaching him how to do tricks.

They would put him in a tank with another trained Whale and get them to do the same tricks, But, if Tilikum didn't do his tricks properly both of them wouldn't get fed so the other Whale would beat him and he would have scratches all over him. February 21, 1991 Victoria Canada, Sealand worker, Keltie Byrne slipped into an enclosure with three orcas and was killed by Tilikum. People at sealand said that she drowned accidentally. But, there were eyewitnesses who identified tilikum as the orca that killed her.

After this sealand closed its doors and sold Tilikum to the seaworld in Orlando under the promise he would not be used for shows, although he was.

None of the trainers at seaworld were told that Tilikum killed keltie byrne, they were lied to and told he had nothing to do with it.

February 24 2010 Orlando Florida, seaworld trainer Dawn Brancheau got pulled underwater and brutally killed by tilikum.

Dawn Brancheau’s death is not an example of how deadly orcas are.Whales have never killed anyone in the wild and can even be described as friendly by people who encounter them in the wild. but there have been at least four kills in captivity. Her death is an example of how orca’s are not meant to be held captive. When Tilikum killed it wasn’t because he’s crazy or savage it was because he was frustrated at spending his life in a swimming pool.

Although in 2016, seaworld promised to stop breeding orcas, many other marine parks still have breeding programs. So if we stop going to all kinds of marine parks especially SeaWorld surely they will close down and stop keeping animals in captivity and they will be able to roam free.
